7-26 Update
I realized yesterday that I hadn't updated the blog lately. Time flys over the summer. I'm not sure if anyone is reading this anymore, but it is good as a journal of our family, so here goes:
Sarah has had a rough time. First, she had all the makeup homework when we got back to China. She was just getting back to normal once summer kicked in and we had lots of camps setup for her. She also had a summer job lined up walking the neighbor's dog. Then, 4th of July week, her foot started hurting her. When we got home from up north, we had it xrayed, but that was negative. Then she had a bone scan and it showed she had a stress fracture of her 2nd metatarsul. So, she has been taking it easy since and we had to cancel one basketball camp and two soccer camps and she had to end her softball season early. What a bummer !! She is handling it pretty well. We try to go for bike rides, swimming and she has had some sleepovers with friends. On the plus side, she has had time to straighten out her room and do alot of reading!!
Katherine is doing well. She is finishing up a kindergarten prep class this week. She was in that for about a month (3 hours a day, 4 days a week). She seems to like it -she always comes out smiling and showing us all her artwork. She is learning her alphabet and to write her name. We are meeting with her teacher tomorrow to talk about how she did and how she would do in kindergarten. We are not sure if we should send her to kindergarten this year (and probably repeat next year) or send her to K4 this year. If we do K4, then either Steve needs to retire or we need to do daycare. We are looking at our options. I don't think there is a bad decision, but we are just looking at what would be best.
The biggest issue we have now is with Katherine and Sarah. This is all on Katherine's end. She just doesn't seem to get what a big sister is. She doesn't hate Sarah or bite or kick. It is more like she is indifferent to her. And sometimes, she purposely is mean. Like Saturday in church, she shook hands with everyone around for the sign of peace, but purposely ignored Sarah. And Sunday night, she kissed Steve and I goodnight but refused to kiss Sarah. Yesterday, she didn't want Sarah to read to her. This is very frustrating. Sarah has been extremely patient with her. Alot of other kids would have said the heck with her some time ago. We continue to work on this. I am going to post on my Yahoo groups to see if this is "normal" for a kid this age and ask for suggestions. We try to do lots of family activities - biking, playing games, etc. so that Katherine gets the idea that we are a family and Sarah is her big sis who loves her.
Other than that, Katherine seems happy and she seems to just roll with new things. She loves to swim. When we first got her, she didn't want to put her head under or let go of Steve or I. Now, she goes under water, blows bubbles, does somersaults, and she actually can swim a small length across the pool. This is all without lessons - just show here something once or twice and she is off doing it !! We have gone to various festivals and she loves the rides. She always wants to go on the wilder ones for the bigger kids !! No fear for her. We have gone up north several times and she loves that. She likes fishing (though she is afraid of the fish), swimming, etc. She has even turned into a bit of a couch potato in that she loves to watch Go Diego Go and Little Bear. She used to like Dora, but I think she burnt out on that.
Well, enough for now. I hope to post some pictures and maybe figure out how to post some video as well. I just got my computer working again (had to reload windows, it was so slow and I couldn't read in the video) and now it works. I just uploaded all our China video.
God Bless and pray for continued growth of Katherine and Sarah as siblings !!
